Meeting with the General Authority for Communications and Informatics
As part of strengthening institutional cooperation and supporting digital transformation efforts in Libya, the Foundation’s team held a meeting with Mr. Abdulbasit Al-Baour, Chairman of the General Authority for Communications and Informatics, to explore prospects for joint collaboration and coordinate efforts across a number of national initiatives related to the information technology sector.
During the meeting, both parties discussed ways in which the Authority could contribute to the success of the Informatics Governance Forum, scheduled to be held on May 17. This forum represents an important national platform that brings together key stakeholders from the public and private sectors, as well as academia and civil society, with the aim of enhancing collaboration and advancing Libya’s digital transformation agenda.
It was also agreed that the forum would include a celebration of the national .LY domain, in accordance with the standards and policies of ICANN, as part of efforts to promote good governance and the effective management of national digital resources. This direction aligns with ongoing efforts to organize and manage the Libyan domain within an annual event referred to as the “Libya Digital Forum (.LY Annual Conference),” which serves as an official platform for discussing issues related to the national domain and promoting its use.
The meeting also addressed a proposal to establish an advisory committee dedicated to the .LY domain, to be announced in conjunction with the forum’s activities. This initiative aims to support the development of related policies and enhance stakeholder engagement.
In this context, the Foundation emphasized the importance of investing in building the capacities of the younger generation in the technology field, with a focus on raising awareness about the significance of national domain management and understanding its technical and regulatory dimensions, thereby supporting the sustainability of Libya’s digital infrastructure.
The Foundation also commended the Authority’s support in facilitating its membership in the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), which strengthens its presence in international forums and reinforces its role as an active player in the technology sector.
During the meeting, the Foundation presented its “Digital Enablement” project to the Authority, which expressed strong interest and appreciation for the initiative, praising the Foundation’s efforts in promoting technological awareness and enhancing digital culture within society.
This meeting comes as part of the Foundation’s ongoing efforts to strengthen strategic partnerships with national entities, contributing to the integration of efforts and the advancement of digital development in Libya.
